The Power of Mantra. Sound currents that alter Mind, Body & Heart
Sound is the cause of all things. Words are sacred and powerful.
There are magical languages found across many cultures, from Sanskrit, to Hebrew, to Latin, to Gurmukhi, these languages are imbued with spiritual power, the letters and words are symbols that each vibrate at their own frequency, activating different aspects within us that radiate out into the world around us.
For millennia mystics have taught their devotees what science is now catching up to believe, that matter is alive and vibrating, life on earth is made of sound waves. All that we see around us is an interweaving of these sound waves, they cluster and expand into infinite combination creating visual manifestations.
Sacred texts from antiquity attest to the power that words and sound vibrations have to create, that in fact they are the building blocks that make up our reality. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” says the bible. The Hindu scriptures speak of the same phenomenon, “In the beginning was Brahman with whom was the Word, and the Word is Brahman.” Sound waves, precede creation, they are the substance of every manifestation.
On a biological level speech activates energy points within the mouth, like in reflexology the organs and glands that connect through energetic lines in our hands, ears and feet also meet in the mouth. Meridian lines and energy centers that travel through, and exist within and around our bodies all have a meeting point in the mouth. Speech, and the motion of the mouth and tongue awaken and affect every part of our reality, our physical being, and our energetic experience.
The sages and meta-physicists of the East and West have connected with these powerful creative principles, they intentionally craft their reality through the use of symbols and sounds. One of the ways they do this is by repeating mantras and the names of God to activate sound waves within their physical body, and in their mind and heart.
Mantras are a combination of words and sounds that awaken different aspects within us, by the click of the tongue we tune into the higher frequencies available within our constitution, these frequencies lay along our spine in energetic clusters, the Chakras. Chanting mantra regularly tunes the Chakras to higher and higher vibrations, kind of like an opera singer that continually trains her voice to reach higher and higher pitches.
There are 50 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet each of which correspond to one of the 50 petals found on the lotus flowers of our 6 Chakras (the 7th Chakra is a thousand petals crown, not traditionally considered a Chakra). As we chant mantras we are opening up the petals of our Chakras because each vowel and consonant is related to one of the petal.
Each of our Chakras correspond to different aspects of our human experience.
- The Root Chakra represents our connection to earth, our need for safety, security and a sense of belonging.
- The Sacral Chakra is our sexual and sensual center, from which we process and experience the physical world around us, and also experience creativity.
- The Solar Plexus Chakra represents our will, self esteem, drive and determination.
- The Heart Chakra represents our need for love, partnership, community, and our ability for compassion and relationship.
- The Throat Chakra represents our desire to express our truth and creativity, it is our center of communication.
- The Third Eye Chakra represents self mastery and our psychic abilities, it is our intuitive center from where we see into other worlds and possibilities.
- The Crown represents our connection to all that is.
Ultimately, when we sing mantra we are connecting to these aspects within us, purifying, refining, and elevating the vibrations they emanate to align to the purest sound possible, like tuning an instrument, when the sound is clean and clear it creates a beautiful harmony within the instrument, ie the human body, which can then play with the cosmic symphony without causing dis-ease.
Many people are discovering that if they use the energy of sound properly, they can create positive change in every area of life. By tuning their instruments regularly they create harmony in their emotional body and quiet the mind so they can listen to the voice of spirit and intuition.
We can make the best decisions from a place of neutrality. Mantra helps us create new patterns in our brain, new ways of managing our emotional reactions, and new patterns of thought that are healthy and elevated.
